He was still practicing and teaching Judo at Roseberry's Martial Arts Center. Sensei Paul contributed so much to our dojo and the Judo program, he will be missed.

One amazing thing that I recall about Sensi Paul was that one class he was showing a group of kids how to pin somebody and called me over to demonstrate. He pinned me and told me to escape. As hard as I tried, I couldn't. I eventually had to give up when I noticed a blood stain on the elbow of his judogi. His skin was so thin that it would tear easily and I had torn a big flap loose. I fealt horrible. He just shrugged it off and said "oh, that happens." He let me lead him over to the first aide kit and bandage him up and then he was back out on the mat.

Sensi Paul also had a stubborn will to keep going. He'd be sitting on the mat and if you offered him a hand getting up, he'd refuse and stand on his own -- very slowly, but on his own.

Sensi Ray Peterson posted a comment on the Jui-Jutsu Fighter Blog about how he was never able to choke Sensi Paul. I remember one class where Sensi Paul was teaching choking techniques and had one of the students try to choke him. If you let go before he patted-out, he'd ask "why did you stop?" and make you do it again.

In November of 2004, the Lincoln Journal Star published an article about Sensei Paul. Sensi Conan already reproduced it on the Jui-Jutsu Fighter Blog, so I won't duplicate it here.

KHAS-TV in Hastings did a news piece on Sensei Paul a couple of years ago. The video works fine in Internet Explorer, but not in Firefox for some reason.

Sensi Paul's funeral is set for Wednesday in Lincoln. It is at 4:00 at First Plymouth Church, 20th and D Streets. This tournament is named for Sensi Ashida, who was once a sensi at UNL and, despite being 80-something, still teaches judo at the State University of New York.

The tournament was well attended. For their entry fee, participants were allowed to register in two divisions and many took advantage of this. There were about 10 to 12 people in the Men's Open division. The matches ran from 11:15 (does any tournament ever start when advertised?) to about 4:00.

One highlight of the tournament was watching Porter Giles, age 5, fight in his first tournament. He had to fight a kid who was a lot bigger than him and lost twice, but as he was unopposed in his division, he still got a gold medal. Porter's father Brian is a karate sensi and couldn't have been prouder to have passed the torch on to the next generation. Well, maybe if Porter had won.

The scoreboard program was used again after a quick reprogramming to follow the new IJF rules which eliminate the score of "koka". The day after this reprogramming, we were informed that we had to continue using the old rules because the new rules don't go into effect until Jan 1 and the flier submitted when the tournament was sanctioned said "Current IJF Rules Apply". However, all the participants agreed to follow the new rules, so we did.

After the tournament, the UNL Judo Club and two members of Sho Rei Shobu Kan went to Old Chicago for pizza and beer.

The Vetran Judoka

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MjgU9XmvqRo/ST4H96lOnQI/AAAAAAAAABk/S9DjQMpUDR4/s400/l_bdd734000a424fd6a1678b8841585377.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277664573603618050" />

IJF Rules Change

The International Judo Federation announced some changes to the official rules for judo competitions which go into effect on January 1, 2009. The main change is that the "koka" score has been eliminated.

There are also a few "reiterations" of rules that haven't actually changed but which have not been enforced well in the past. These are mostly rules about "negative" judo which should result in a penalty.

These new rules were used in the two tournaments in Iowa recently and will be used for the UNL Judo tournament scheduled for Saturday, December 13th.

Artwork by Ken Haddix

Fall Judo Tournament Report

The Fall Judo Tournament was a success. I didn't get a count of the competitors, but it was a good turn out. We only had one minor injury: a boy who turned out of a throw and did a face-plant. After a brief medical time-out, the fight continued and he quickly won by ippon. We also had some new referees from other schools which was very nice.

We also used a new timer program which, aside from a few operator mistakes (I was the operator), worked pretty well. Thanks to Aaron Hall from the UNL Judo club for letting us use his laptop computer for this.

Don't forget the upcoming tournaments (see previous article). The UNL tournament will be held at the Sho Rei Shobu Kan dojo on December 13th. They wanted to hold it at the University, but the University was not cooperating in letting them book the facility, so we offered to let them hold it at our dojo.

I've posted the photos that Skyler took using my camera to my family web site here. The dojo facility is over 7,000 square feet and includes an Olympic Judo mat (for Judo, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu, Daitoryu and Yoga) and a large wooden floor (for Karate, Kobudo and Tai Chi). Besides learning the physical techniques of judo, karate, aikido, t'ai chi, and yoga students learn such mental attitudes as patience, self-assurance, respect, and self-discipline. Students discover that they are encouraged to grow spiritually as well as physically. Upon enrolling in a course of instruction, beginning students soon realize that they have many teachers. All of the students ahead of them are responsible for their instruction and well-being. Beginning students are treated kindly and respectfully. In return students are expected to practice diligently and to be respectful to other students and teachers. Indeed, mutual respect is one of the basics of martial arts training. Students are never asked to do anything beyond their capability but are encouraged to put forth their best effort. "Do Your Best!" is a familiar phrase heard in Sho-Rei-Shobu-Kan practice sessions. The motto of the Sho-Rei-Shobu-Kan School is "respect and manners." All students of Sho-Rei-Shobu-Kan enjoy an atmosphere conducive to good training and personal growth.
